Macworld Expo Interview

See Shannon's interview, at Macworld Expo, on PixelHeadsNetwork.com and keep an eye out for what the back of my shirt says! (c; I had just come back from lunch and had no idea that he was being interviewed, so I just marched right in to the video - lol.

MacBook Air Winner!

We've drawn the winner for the MacBook Air: Ron Kahn, of Riverside, California! Thanks to all who participated in the contest by letting us scan your badge at Macworld Expo. Here's what Ron had to say about his fabulous new laptop:

Thank you!

I have wanted a MacBook Air since they were introduced. I can put this to immediate use in the video production courses I teach at Patriot High School in Riverside, CA.

I have wanted to begin webcasting the daily news show produced by one of my classes, and this MacBook Air will be perfect for that application.

TechRestore will be my choice for all of my Mac Repair and upgrade needs.
Thank you again.

Ron Kahn

The Scoop on the Matte Finish MBP Upgrade

Things I Know Are Ture
It's been a fantastic week exhibiting at MacWorld Expo!

We've seen a record number of people coming by the booth each day and one of the most popular items we are displaying is the Glossy to Matte finish screen replacement service for the 15-inch MacBook Pro Unibody models. We have our prototype at the show, and it's incredible how many people have come by to thank us for coming out with this service. Seems like there's a large population of MacBook Pro users that don't like using that shiny screen.

Once we got mentioned by MacWorld magazine, where their reviewer said "Personally, I feel like the TechRestore guys do a better job with their matte treatment than Apple did" , our phones started ringing off the hook for this new service. If you can't get to the show to see the samples of the MacBook Pro with a non-shiny screen, here's some quick answers to some common questions that have come up:

What does the screen replacement include?

In order to replace the super-shiny screen with a traditional matte (anti-glare) screen, we remove the glass screen cover (you know, that mirror-like glass you have been seeing your reflection in), then we remove the glossy LCD (LED backlight) screen. We then replace the glossy screen with a matte-finish screen that has the exact same specifications as the original; same resolution, same color depth, same LED backlight...you get the idea. We install a custom black bezel around the edge of the screen that matches the finish of the MacBook Pro and looks great. The bezel has all the required holes in it for the iSight and other items that sit at the top of the MacBook Pro screen housing.

Are you just putting an anti-glare screen cover on the screen?

No. Our beta testers on this service have told us they do not like the anti-glare covers since they tend to distort images and make color matching very difficult. We will be replacing your entire LCD panel.

Will you post some photos on your website, already!?

We will be posting some actual before-after photos on our site next week for your review.

How long does the service take?

The screen replacement is completed within 24-hours (M-F) of receipt to us.

What about my warranty?

We provide a 1-year warranty on your new screen. Our technicians have performed tens of thousands of repairs on in-warranty laptops since 1994 and we have never had a warranty declined by the manufacturer due to our service. Of course, the manufacturer will not cover any parts we install on your laptop, we take care of that for you. In the unlikely event that you have a problem getting warranty service on your laptop after we perform any repair or upgrade, simply give us a call so we can provide you with assistance. We are here to help.

What other products will you be offering this service on?

We've had a tremendous response to this new service. Watch for new products being added during the coming weeks. To get an alert about new service offerings, sign up for our
Specials newsletter. We have one more day of the show, which ends at 4PM on Friday. I'll then be driving the Time Machine out of the Moscone Center and taking a couple of days to recuperate from being on our feet talking non-stop for four days. It's been a great show and we hope that MacWorld Expo continues to be such a great resource for Mac users everywhere.

Thanks for your support!
Shannon Jean

Macworld Expo was an amazing success! We got to see tons of satisfied customers, who dropped by to say hi and tell us what a great job we do, as well as connecting with people who've never used our service before. You can see the TechRestore booth (and our friends from eunitech) in this Quicktime VR photo from Macworld '08. By now, you've no doubt heard of Apple's new roll-outs, including the MacBook Air (soon to be on our dissecting table) and the update to the iPhone and iPod touch that simulates GPS tracking by triangulating your position based on nearby WiFi hotspots! Exciting stuff.

Our Macworld booth is nearly ready! Today, we're putting on the finishing touches. This year, were in a ritzy neighborhood, by the Microsoft Blogger's lounge. Here's an early glimpse (a la phone cam):

Macworld Expo pass update: Our registration code keeps running out of free comps just as fast as IDG can up our limit. While I'd like to think that it's just because TechRestore is so popular, more than likely the code has been reposted elsewhere so, at this point, the best we can offer is a $10 registration, unless IDG ups our limit again. It's still a great deal though, with all of the amazing exhibits that there are to see and, by the look of the show floor so far, this year is going to be stunning!

Tuesday brought us new Mac Pros. Next Tuesday will be the keynote to kick off MacWorld Expo '08 featuring Steve Jobs himself. It's no surprise to most that Apple opted to announce the revision to the Mac Pro before MacWorld. In the recent years, Mac World has turned it's focus to more consumer oriented items like iPods, the iTunes store and occasionally the iMac. With the exception to earth shattering new line changes (ie shipping Intel Macs) the pro-consumer product lines are left to be announced at WWDC or with little fan fair.

So why did it surprise me? I have been waiting to see Apple annouce official Blu-ray Disc support. It's no secret that Apple has been on the Blu-ray board since '05. It's also no surprise that Apple has waited this long to add support with the media war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. But today, over 2 years later, Apple has positioned it's self as the pace setter in the digital media realm. Selling the number one music and video player, controlling the number one digital music and video store, that out paces most brick and mortars, and an amazing line up of computers all with garage band and iTunes pre-installed. So why has Apple waited? Will we see a Blu-ray drive at MacWorld? With more then 50% of the major studios now backing blu-ray, only time can tell. I'll see you at MacWorld.

Free Macworld Expo Passses: Update

IDG has fixed our promotional code for free Macworld Expo passes, so you can print out an updated copy or you may use 08-G-PC300 to register online.

Since we had such an overwhelming response, we reached the maximum number of free tickets rather quickly, after which, people using our code were asked to pay $10. This has now been fixed and registration is, once again, absolutely free! So be sure to register before 11:59pm, on January 13th, when the code expires.

See you there, and don't forget to drop by booth# S-845 to win free T-shirts and iPods!

iPhone 2.0 vs. FlatBook Pro

Rumors about the announcement of a second generation iPhone, at Macworld Expo abound. Perhaps it will have GPS and record video but, either way, it's not all that exciting. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, the iPhone is to small for computing and too big to be a phone. I think the bigger announcement is going to be a tablet version of the MacBook (Pro), that makes use of the touch screen technology seen in the iPhone and iPod touch. Hopefully it will operate somewhat like the Microsoft Surface. Of course you can already get a ModBook, but it requires a pen and, besides, everything's more appealing once Apple reinvents it.
