The Special News is Out!

Hey there,

We just sent out this weeks Special News with a bunch of laptop deals, upgrade savings and iPod battery discounts. Here's the intro that was included, along with a list of specials. To get the coupon codes, simply add your name to the list here. You'll get instant access to the deals.

----
Spring is in the air. The lawns are green beyond imagination, bolstered by the massive amount of rain that we experienced over the last two months, every plant in the garden is bursting with flowers, as if to say "Look at me! I'm still here after being nearly drowned!" The bugs are coming out in full force, with armies of snails getting ready to invade the soft plants territory and anything with wings has taken flight, buzzing and flying with exuberance now that the sun has returned. I gave in and finally turned the sprinkler system back on this past weekend, with a week that for the first time in years (it seems) didn't call for at least some rain to come our way.

Turning on the sprinkler system has its drawbacks, of course. This means you have to take the time to check and be sure said sprinklers are actually working and not just blasting water out onto the street, while the plants go dry. What typically happens when I'm ready to work on the sprinkler system is that some magical force starts the wind up just in time to make a mockery of my adjustments and to cover me with a fine mist of water throughout the entire adjustment exercise. This is usually followed by loud bursts of laughter from my wonderful children as they watch me hop around, trying to avoid getting completely drenched. Oh well, at least it's entertaining for someone. ;-). It's amazing how much the temperature drops when your clothes begin to take on water from the 3-4 sprinkler heads that are somehow all aimed in your general direction. And I went to school for this stuff. Sitting in class at Cal Poly, learning the ins and outs of irrigation design has done nothing to keep me from getting blasted each and every time I try and influence how the water is dispersed in the garden.

We use these little micro-spayers for most of the plants, which, in theory, are great since they use less water and are easy to pop in wherever you need them. Just run the main lines and add a micro-spray wherever you have plants. Seems simple enough. Except the person who designed these things obviously was not dealing with two of the major forces in my life: Kids and dogs. My kids are just like yours, when they see shooting water, they immediately lose their minds and do anything they can to maneuver their way into the water. If I could only figure out how to teach a four year old to adjust the arc of a tiny little sprinkler, I'd have the perfect solution to my ranting in the last paragraph. But I can't, so I watch the kids running in the water, with the sun shining through the tiny raindrops that fall down onto our plants and our lawns and I smile, because I am reminded that water is one of life's magical creations. And even though we've been drenched for the past few months, with spring making it's way into our lives I know it will be shortly followed by the hot summer days where I'll soon hear shouts of urgency whenever I have the hose in my hands, imploring me to "Make a rainbow, Dad!" I'll smile broadly as I am known to do when my kids are around and point the hose to the sky. This will be followed by little feet all around me, by faces uplifted, searching for colors and big fat "raindrops" showering back down to the earth to land on our heads and bring forth more laughter and memories that are sure to keep me warm as I grow older.

Leaving the warm and fuzzy picture above, the kids also wreak havoc on the little micro-spray heads, but probably not as much as the dogs. Roman, our beloved Weimeraner used to love to work his way from drinking the water coming from the sprinklers to chewing the thing right off the top. Once the sprinkler head is chewed off, the water bursts straight of the ground and the only good thing to come of it is the surprised look on the dogs face the first instant the burst hits their nose. Guinness hasn't discovered the micr-spray heads yet, but based on his antics with the spray bottle of water that Renee uses each morning to tame Skylar's hair, I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time.

Care to share your water story? Send me an email with your antics and if I post it in the Specials Blog we'll send a 2006 TechRestore T-shirt your way.

First Tri-Tip of the Season!

Blessed Sunshine...

We had an incredible spring day today, which prompted me to fire of the BBQ for the first time this spring. Renee ordered us a new grill set, with new gas burners, new "flavor savers" and a shiny new grill. I spent about a half-hour cleaning out the BBQ and surprisingly just a few minutes to swap in the new parts.

With a big Tri-Tip on the new grill and an ice cold Corona in my hand, I could have sworn it was the end of a July summer day. The kids were on the swing set, Guinness was lounging on the grass and Renee was cooking up some of her wonderful garlic bread. Life was good and the Tri-Tip was even better once it hit the dinner table.

The good weather continues today and I was sorely tempted to lock my jeans away and break out the shorts this morning. But, it was a bit too chilly this morning so I kept my summer garb packed away for a bit longer.

Last night I sent out this weeks Special News, with a bunch of nice discounts on PowerBooks, iBooks, PC repairs, iPod stuff and more. To get the deals, just click over here and get yourself signed up. You'll save big each week and when you get tired of hearing me ramble on, you can unsubscribe at anytime. Once you signup, you'll have instant access to the coupons. The hot deal this week was $150 off the G4/1GHz Titanium PowerBooks. Hurry, they're going fast!

Hope it's sunny where you are...

best,
Shannon

Greetings!

We're having a rare break in the rain before another 5-day storm that's supposed to hit tonight. In a series of miracles, last weekend proved mostly dry and we spent the time moving around outside, getting anything cleaned up that I could before the next deluge starts. Both the kids were out at Birthday parties so it was a good time to start pruning shrubs, raking leaves and mowing the lawns. We rarely make it through a weekend without at least one of the kids having a Birthday party to attend. I'm sure it was the same thing when I was a kid, but it sure seems like a lot of parties to get the kids to. Which tells me I am slowly becoming a grumpy old man.

When I was a kid, I used to be dumbfounded at the fact that my parents didn't want to jump in the car and take me wherever I wanted to go. I mean, who wouldn't want to drive a car? Seemed like the best thing you could want to do, instead of watching the game on TV, working on a project around the house or just relaxing. I can still hear my dads favorite phrase whenever I pushed the envelope a bit to far. "We're not running a Taxi service around here, you know." I knew. But I still had to ask, since riding your bike everywhere was a real drag. I could usually convince my Mom to ferry me around to a friends house or to some other location, my Dad, as you can tell from the previous comment, was a tougher sell. And the thing was, the closer I got to 16, the more I thought my Dad was crazy not to want to drive a car any chance he could get. Even after I was driving my first car, a beat up Jeep that I beat up even more, I thought he was missing out on the best thing around. I'm not sure when the "change" occurs, but at some point many years after you start driving, some of the luster begins to wear off and you realize that maybe there was something to wanting to relax on the weekend instead of jumping in the car over and over again, shuttling kids to and fro. Being that I had three brothers, mine was not the only request.

We're a good number of years off until our house has teenagers in it, but I can see it coming as plain as day. The same requests I made years ago will be ringing in my ears, Skylar and Ethan looking at me incredulously as I give them the news that I actually want to do something else besides drive them around. I'm sure it will be the same, except I promise not to say "We're not running a Taxi service..." I'm sure I'll think of my own grumpy old man comment to offer my stunned children.

While we've all been happily playing DVDs at home, on portable players and in our computers, Hollywood and a number of tech companies have been touting the new "improved" High-Density discs that are headed our way. While the new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD standard sound good from a visual standpoint, there's an alarming amount of control that studios and tech companies will have on these discs, even after you purchase them. And it's not just the discs, but the players that will have to be "approved" by this new HD consortium known as the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator that will decide what companies can make HD players for these discs. I mean, just look at the name of this new group, that's scary enough.

Will HD-DVD and Blu-Ray be the next great thing that we'll all want in our living rooms? Or an Orwellian nightmare that we should shun? I'll let you decide.

Easter plans are in full force at the Jean residence. We spent part of last Sunday coloring eggs and Easter Bunny has been busy getting ready for the big event. As with most holidays, we're fortunate enough to get to do it twice; Saturday with my Mom and my Brothers families and Sunday with Renee's parents and her Brothers families. Ethan is bouncing off the walls in expectation of a day filled with candy and egg hunting and our sophisticated 8-year old is playing it close to the vest, but I expect her to enjoy it just as much, maybe even more.
